Build your dream game

Independent Black game developers around the world are envisioning and building powerful new gaming experiences—from polished indie gems to potential AAA blockbusters—but in many cases they lack access to the resources needed to take their project to the next level, or even just get it off the ground.
The Black Game Developer Fund is an annual fund designed to help empower Black game developers to take that next step and move their compelling game vision forward.

How it works

Applications are evaluated by a committee including BGDF advisors Justin Woodward and Sithe Ncube, as well as Humble Games, the originator of the fund, to determine design potential and commercial viability. We’re looking for game ideas that will stand out from the crowd and wow players and critics—so admission is highly selective.
Each developer accepted into the BGDF program will receive funding to support their project along with ongoing counsel to help them flesh out their prototype and prepare for securing a publishing deal.

Since the BGDF was established in June 2020, over 30 games at various stages of development have received funding.

Current BGDF-funded projects bring exciting new concepts and perspectives to traditional game genres, such as a beatboxing rhythm game, a solarpunk action-platformer, a neo-noir shooter in which the player battles through a haunted hotel filled with classic horror movie monsters, a match-3 puzzler with visual novel elements and a chill lofi soundtrack, a thrilling action-adventure that melds African mythology with epic fantasy, and more.
