Product Description
Amidst the glimmer of neon lights, technological advancement causes humans to be consumed by commercial convenience. In the shadows, a war between the Yatagarasu and the Phantom Society is brewing, Devil Summoners who harness the otherworldly powers of “Demons”. Existing in the secret sea of humanity’s data, a digital hivemind has evolved into sentience: Aion. Observing humankind from afar, Aion calculates that a world-ending disaster is imminent and creates two agents to combat against it: Ringo and Figue. Together, these agents of Aion must investigate and prevent a butterfly effect that will lead to the end of the world.

Now some history. The original Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers was a Japan-only 1997 Sega Saturn (and 1999 Playstation) spinoff from the Shin Megami Tensei franchise. It eventually got a 3DS release in 2012 in the West.
Soul Hackers 2 appears to be a reboot of sorts for this spinoff of the SMT franchise, and no prior experience with the original Soul Hackers game appears to be necessary. I personally find the gameplay loop, story, characters, art, english dub and music to be well done. I don't want to spoil anything, so I won't go into details. I did check out the day one DLCs. Some of the loot DLCs could definitely make the party overpowered, so I advise moderation there. It should be noted that costume DLC is visible only in combat, not in the overworld or in cutscenes.
Again, please consider that this is not a Persona game, and never was stated to be one. It is a new twist on an entirely different SMT spinoff from 1997. Soul Hackers 2 is definitely my new favorite SMT adjacent title. I very much enjoy it, and I encourage fellow fans of SMT and Persona to give it a try.
From the moment I booted up the game, I was struck by the stunning visuals and engaging storyline. The game takes place in a futuristic world where demons and cybercrime collide, and you play as a member of the elite "Hacker's Guild" tasked with investigating and stopping a new threat to society.
The gameplay is a unique blend of turn-based battles and dungeon crawling, with a deep customization system that allows you to build your characters and their abilities to suit your playstyle. The battles themselves are intense and strategic, with a variety of demons and enemy factions to face off against.
One of the standout features of Soul Hackers 2 is the "hacking" system, which allows you to manipulate the environment and enemy systems to gain an advantage in battle. This adds a whole new layer of strategy to the gameplay, and makes each encounter feel unique and exciting.
Overall, I highly recommend Soul Hackers 2: Launch Edition to any fan of RPGs, dungeon crawlers, or cyberpunk themes. Its engaging storyline, deep customization system, and unique hacking mechanic make it a standout in the genre. So grab your controller and get ready to hack your way into a soulful new adventure!
Is it as good as Persona?
No, but it is definitely worth the buy!
Walking speeds are locked behind mana points, dungeons are terrible and boring, animations in battle are super slow even with fast forward function and story isn't anything new. There is also lack of weapons to be used by the only 4 main cast. Saizo is the only character worth mentioning but even he can't hold this game up to be even remotely good. Wait until it goes on sale because it's not worth a 60 + 40 DLC dollar game.

Heres what I felt was good about it.
Good:
-Characters were cool, pretty fleshed out and fun (for the most part)
-Soundtrack was great for me although the main dungeon track was driving me crazy just like the track that plays in the original P5 mementos.
-Turn based battle system that you've come to expect in Megami Tensei games is what you expect. Nothing mindblowing, just good.
-I found the story to be pretty good. I found some parts to be odd or weird but that's just me.
Bad:
-The dungeon crawling parts of this game is easily the worst part, uninspired, repetitive and frustrating. When you starting going deeper and deeper into specific character's dungeons and story dungeons it gets really bad. Since this is a big chunk of the game, this part weighs the score down heavily.
-social interactions with your characters feel like a bad attempt to replicate what the Persona series did. You can learn some interesting stuff from your merry party but it feels strange. Also, hanging out with your friends increase their points in which when you get to a certain amount of points will end up opening new dungeons which I already said, are not good.
Apperently, this game was worse before all the updates but I got the game in it's fixed version but even with all that its a solid 3 out of 5 for me. If you are an achievement hunter, it's pretty easy to obtain but very grindy. Also, there is a free upgrade to the ps5 version if you buy the ps4 version.
